The Silent Revolution: Quartz Watches Were Once Expensive Luxury!
Before the 'Quartz Crisis' made them ubiquitous and affordable, early quartz watches were incredibly expensive, often costing more than their mechanical counterparts. The first commercially available quartz wristwatch, the Seiko Astron 35SQ, launched on Christmas Day 1969, retailed for 450,000 Yen, which was equivalent to a medium-sized car at the time. This high price reflected the immense research and development costs, as well as the cutting-edge technology involved.
